Six Simple Ways To Save Gas

Reprinted from the December 2001 issue of Nature's Voice, the newsletter of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

* Check Your Tire Pressure. More than one quarter of all cars and light trucks are driven with tires filled at least eight pounds below their proper levels. If all Americans kept their tires inflated properly, our nation would cut its gasoline use by two percent.
* Follow the Speed Limit. Slowing down from 75 to 65 miles per hour cuts highway gasoline consumption by about ten percent.
* Reduce Idling. We waste four million gallons of gas every day by idling our engines while parked or waiting in line. If the wait is longer than 30 seconds, starting up your car again uses less gasoline than leaving it running.
* Keep Your Car Tuned Up. A poorly tuned or poorly maintained engine can increase gasoline consumption by as much as 10 to 20 percent. Use fuel efficient motor oil-look for the "Energy Conserving" label-that reduces friction and can increase fuel economy by three percent or more.
*Use Car-Pools, Public Transportation and Telecommuting. If each commuter carried just one more passenger once a week, we could cut gasoline consumption by two percent. If one commuter out of ten took public transit or worked from home, we'd save another two percent.
* Buy the Highest Milage Car That Meets Your Needs. When you're ready for a new car, think about how big a car, pickup, or SUV you really need, then compare models in the same group, and pick the one that gets the most miles per gallon. Or, better yet, consider buying a gas-electric hybrid car that recharges as you drive, gets as much as 60 miles per gallon or more, and can be refueled at any gas station.
