Ron Smalley, MD (ret) - Watercolor Artist           Ron Smalley, MD (ret)

I am a retired Family Physician who moved, in 1994, to Longmont from my home state of Michigan.
Since then I have been devoting more time to my favorite avocation of watercolor painting.

I enjoy watercolor because of its unpredictability when pigment, water and paper meet producing
particularly beautiful effects not obtainable with other media. Also, I hope my paintings convey
a special sense of mood or feeling. It is really rewarding when others seem to feel inspired by
one of my paintings.

Over the years I have sought the advice and counsel of great contemporary watercolorists in Michigan
and have studied under nationally known masters such as Tony Couch, Frank Webb and Tom Lynch.
I am an admirer of past great American painters such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent,
John Marin and Charles Burchfield. My philosophy of artistic concepts follows the teachings of
Edgar Whitney as explained by Tony Couch.

I have been privileged to win several awards at local regional exhibitions including “Best of Show” at
the Louisville Art Association’s Fall Show in 1997. Some wonderful people have decided to add my work
to their private collections and for that I am truly grateful.

I have been teaching a class at The Old Fire House Art Center in Longmont, Colorado which clearly
informs the student about the truly basic elements for success in producing interesting watercolor art.
